Playa Giron consists of a beach and small village on the east coast of “The Bay of Pigs”, the site where Castro forces repelled an ill-fated C.I.A. invasion aimed at overthrowing the new government.
After 72 hours of fighting the American forces were pushed back to Playa Giron where they were forced to abandon their attempt and thus fled the island. Today this sleepy fishing village hosts the beautiful Villa Cubanacan Hotel where visitors can rent individual bungalows along the gorgeous sandy beach and enjoy the stunning scenery and quiet surroundings Cuba is famous for. Due largely to the island’s strictly enforced governmental regulations, most of the diving locations off of Playa Giron have been unaffected by fishing or high pressure tourism. The effect is that these sites have remained pristine and are growing and thriving where many popular coral reef locations are in decline. Divers that go out with Playa Giron’s only licensed operator will be treated to stunningly colourful corals, large schools of tropical fish, cave and cavern systems and several wreck dives. Regardless of your level of experience, this sleepy destination has something to offer every diver.
