There are some 40 dive sites within 30 min's boat journey of Nice. They are spread along the coastline by Nice, in the bay of Villefranche, at St Jean Cap Ferat and Cap Estel. Villefranche Bay itself is a sheltered spot which means you can always find conditions good enough to dive.

The scenery is lovely with something for beginners as well as deeper drop offs for the more advanced. There’s a cavern with stunning red coral growing on its ceiling which can be explored by all levels of diver. Other sites are comprised of a mixture of pinnacles, underwater cliffs, gullies and tunnels. Find huge blue gorgonians fans, peacock tails hiding scorpion fish, massive grouper, conger and moray eel. Divers are likely to see plenty of fish of the type that you could expect to see on any gourmet plate. Squid, octopus, barracuda, crayfish, jack fish and more.

What’s not to do? Wander along the Promenade du Anglais. Enjoy the views from Castle Hill or the Cote d'Azur Observatory, take in the charming narrow streets of the old town. Bask in the peace of the Monastere de Cimiez and its gardens. This being France there are, of course, many museums, to explore too. Amongst others, check out the Musee National Marc Chagall, Musee d'Art et d'Histoire Palais Massena or Theatre de la Photographie et de l'Image. If this sounds like way too much then, of course, there are many beaches to relax on too.

Children will love dodging the fountains and water jets on the Promenade du Paillon where there’s also a playground and big wheel. There’s a playground at Castle Hill too. A large aquarium, zip lining and theme parks lie just out of town too. Hire roller skates, bikes and skateboards at the Promenade du Anglais, rent a jet ski, try wakeboarding and between December and April you can be on the ski slopes in little over and hour.

Organised pick pocketing and petty theft is a problem. Never keep anything you don’t mind losing in your pockets, use lockers on beaches or leave someone with the valuables when you swim and be aware of bags at all times when dining.
