Known as a place of sanctuary to ship wrecks and also to turtles (which are usually fairly close to the shore) there are a good variety of dive sites at Hikkaduwa. Here you can find good quality reef formations, underground caves and multi-level rock complexes that serve as refuge to numerous underwater life forms.

Hikkaduwa Beach is a pleasant beach to spend non-dive time and you can learn more about Hikkaduwa’s history and culture at the Tsunami HonganjiVihara and SeenigamaMuhuduViharaya. There is also a Turtle Hatchery and the Coral Sanctuary which are worth a look.

Sri Lanka has its resident blue whale population which if very lucky you might see. You can also see humpback and sperm whales on a rare occasion but on the whole you need to travel out a lot further cannot dive with them. Hikkaduwa also gets other occasional other pelagic creatures like whale sharks and manta considerably a rare bonus!

I am not sure Sands counts as boutique.. I would go for either Aditya or Lavanga Resort which is on the beach x
