Nuweiba is a great place to get away from the crowds, go for the diving, beaches and a relaxing time.

It’s a great place for children to learn to dive or get some experience, but there is little other in the way of children’s activities.

Marine Conservation

There are no specific marine projects, but Nuweiba has a solid waste management and recycling program to handle this growing worldwide problem. This NGO also has patrols to monitor illegal fishing practices in order to preserve Nuweiba’s natural resources.

Climate

The hottest months are between May and October where the temperature averages 26-30°C (80-87°F) yet it has been known to top 36°C (92°F). The coolest months are December to February where the average is around 16°C (62°F). It is a windy spot and while this can feel like a hairdryer in summer, as the water and land temperature cool it can feel quite cold, particularly when wet after a dive. It hardly ever rains, be there between October and April to catch this unlikely spectacle.

The Diving

Diving here is from shore, with little current and excellent visibility it’s suitable for beginners and photographers. Access to reefs is by jeep up or down the coast. You can dive all year around, but the best conditions exist between May and September. If you go in the colder months, remember the wind chill will make it feel a lot colder.

Nuweiba has the depth to keep both snorkelers and technical divers happy too. The dive sites are quiet and rich and reefs slide down from the shore all along the coastline. You’ll find the usual colourful reef inhabitants that the Red Sea is famous for plus seahorses, crocodile fish, moray eels, scorpion fish, stone fish, rays, guitar sharks, numerous nudibranch, turtles and much more. This place is a macro hunter paradise with the occasional eagle ray or turtle. All of this is served upon a backdrop of excellent hard coral and colourful soft coral and fans.

Abu Lou Lou is an interesting site. Swim over the sea grass, where you might see a turtle, to the reef which operates as a huge cleaning station. Apart from a variety of fish species, numerous lionfish, shrimp in every hole, the thing to spot here, is frogfish!

If you fancy something a little different then diving on two unused desalination pipes is certainly unique. These pipes lie about 5m (16ft) apart and start at a depth of 5m (16ft)  running to 12m (39ft) and 20m (65ft). Left unused for 30 years, life has moved in and you’ll find them vibrant with life with further pinnacles close by to explore too. This is close to another unusual spectacle called Sinker. In the 1970s, this mooring buoy and chain was accidentally placed in 35m (114ft) of water which was 10m deeper than the length of its chain. It’s now home to a myriad of life and makes an impressive slim vertical reef ascent at the end of your exploration of the house reef. These two along with the close by reef are not to be missed.

How to Get there

The closest international airport is Taba, the road transfer to Nuweiba will take a little over an hour. Sharm El Sheikh is further but has the greatest range of connections. Road transfer will take around 3 hours.  While you can get taxis at the airport you’ll save yourself a headache to arrange one with your resort or dive centre.

Where to Eat & Drink

If you want to get out of your resort then in Nuweiba City area you will find some bars and restaurants. Taraben Beach has a strip of bars and restaurants with a distinctly hippy feel which seems somewhat similar to the Thailand of yesteryear.

Other Activities

The area is a new tourist development which sprawls haphazardly along 15km of beach. It's weak in history and culture, but the sunrise over the Hijaz Mountains is worth getting out of bed for. Apart from diving and beach indulgence you could take a camel trek, visit the Coloured Canyon or indulge yourself in great views, sauna, cocktails and a stunning pool at Castle Zaman.

Tips

ATMs are at the harbour but not elsewhere on every street corner. If you run out of cash and can't pay by card, you might be in for a little drive!
