Cyprus was always the hub of the Mediterranean and you can see a real cross section of culture around here. From the food to the ancient ruins and history to the white sandy beaches and beautiful sunshine, there literally is something here for every person.

The locals in Protaras are known for their hospitality and welcoming nature and you will always find a friendly face at the local bars and tavernas.

This region of Cyprus  is predominantly known for the wreck of the Zenobia shipwreck, which is situated just up the coast off Larnaca. She sank in 1980 and was a roll on roll off ferry that is 172m long, 28m wide and carried 104 articulated lorries with fully loaded trailers, a JCB and a mini car. The top sits at 18m, the bottom is 42m and there are plenty of penetration options for suitably qualified divers, making her perfect for all levels.

We also have beautifully clear, warm waters making Cyprus an ideal place for diver training.

You never know what you will see in our waters either, as we have many visitors from the red sea down the suez canal and the local government has been sinking wrecks recently for divers.

Marine Conservation

Only in its infancy here but there is a company called A P Marine that is currently developing some diving  routes with regards to marine conservation. Zenobia is a no fishing zone. Dive centres regularly take part in beach clean ups to make sure the oceans stay clean.

The climate is pretty stable all year round. It is always balmy with the water temperature never dropping below 16 degrees. The nights in the winter can be cold and we can get the odd rain/wind storm but they don’t usually last long.

The summer is hot with temperatures sometimes exceeding 40 degrees and the water can hit 31 degrees but we have fantastic thermoclines that help to cool you down, sometimes dropping 6-7 degrees.

Other Year round Marine life

Squid, nudibranchs, Mediteranean White Seal (spotted very occasionally), parrot fish, sea bream, damsel fish, hermit crabs, puffer fish, wrasse, grouper, barracuda, amberjack, Mediterranean jacks, Moray eels, coral crab, sea hares, fire worm..

Shore Diving

We have a variety of shore sites here in Protaras with varying depths from 5 to 45 metres. The wildlife is similar at most dive sites with regular sightings of Octopus, Morays, Crab and grouper with seasonal visits from barracuda, jacks, squid, turtles, seahorses etc.

Most sites can be adapted for any level of diver, as they step down in depth gradually and currents are minimal if present at all. For the bulk of the year, the conditions are flat blue waters with the chance of the occasional wind storm in the very late/very early  months of the year.

Boat Diving

Nemesis III wreck: Its a new wreck sunk in December 2013 and so is only gradually getting fish life on it at the moment, although she already has a healthy coating of squid eggs. 30m certification recommended

Liberty wreck: Varies with wildlife and season. Can be strong currents here and is at 27 metres so confident divers with 30m certification only

Zenobia wreck: 30 metre certification recommended. The top of the boat is at 18m but the bottom is 42metres, so good buoyancy control is essential and nitrox cert is beneficial. Home to groupers, barracuda, jacks, morays , wrasse and bream. Can be current and can be rough seas.

Where to Eat & Drink

Given that Protaras is largely a town that revolves around tourism, there is a wide variety of restaurants and bars to choose from. Most restaurants are run by British expats, and serve anything from pizza to curry to seafood. There are also a few places, including  Bamos and Nicolas Taverna, that serve a good variety of Cyrpriot dishes.  Other favourite restaurants include:

▪ The well Inn (Andreas’ Taverna) on Cavo Greko Avenue

▪ Mojitos Bar and Grill

▪ Los Bandidos Mexican Restaurant

▪ Hokkaido Japanese Restaurant

Nightlife in Protaras is just as varied and always lively. Bars, clubs, and pubs line the main street, with a handful featuring live music and karaoke. Though not as intense as the party scene in neighbouring Ayia Napa, Protaras is sure to keep most people entertained.

Other Activities

There are a number of non-diving activities located throughout Protaras. One of the most popular things to do is visiting the Church of Profitis Elias, and soaking in the spectacular views from its hilltop location. Closer to the water, Fig Tree Bay is one of the most popular beaches to hang out around. There are also a handful of nature trails, which provide great views along with a bit of exercise.

There are plenty of shops to explore throughout Protaras as well. Products range from standard beach ware to tourist fare and jewelry. Water activities are also extremely popular, and you will not be hard pressed to find a place willing to rent you a jet ski or paddle boat for the day.

Protaras is a great family destination, whether your children dive or not.  Children can dive at most of the Cyprus Dive Sites. From as young as 8 years old, we can take them into a confined outlet, 1.5metres deep to see the fish and earn a bubblemaker certificate. Each dive site can be depth limited with easy drop offs and shelves so there is always a bottom underneath for safety. Non-divers may prefer to visit the aquarium to catch a glimpse beneath the ocean without actually getting wet.

Insider Tips

If you are doing a course and getting prices make sure it includes all the manuals and certification fees, guides/instructor etc as some centres give a basic price then add all the bits you need on afterwards. What looks like a good deal quickly becomes very expensive.

Protaras is by in large a town designed for traveling families. Younger people interested in a party will likely prefer Ayia Napa, while those seeking out an authentic Cypritic experience might be happier in Paralimni, which is a bit less fabricated.

There are 3 hyperbaric chambers located in Cyrpus – two in Lanarca and one in Nicosia. The two in Lanarca are the closest to Protaras, and can be reached by road in under an hour (53km).
