From the tip of Cancun to the bottom of the biosphere Sian Kaan, this part of Mexico will not disappoint!

Puerto Morelos, half-way between Playa del Carmen and Cancun, owes it's charm to the simple, small town way of living. Not overcrowded with tourists, excellent beaches and natural surroundings.

The warm, turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea are great for scuba diving to experience underwater life on the Great Meso-American Reef. The coral formations extending along a large portion of the coast are an unforgettable sight which allows you to explore the largest coral reef in the Northern Hemisphere. The numerous subterranean rivers and "Cenotes", formed by water filtering through the limestone, provide another option for those who love diving.

The Puerto Morelos Marine Park, in particular, established in 1998, preserves this  rich biodiversity and makes this area one of the best preserved of the Great Meso-American Reef. For wreck lovers, there is the C-56 Juan Escutia wreck which lies at 29m, a navy boat with healthy coral growth and which, at times, attracts pelagics.

Marine Conservation

Shore Diving

The area doesn't offer shore diving as all of the reefs are further than 500m from shore. However, in Puerto Morelos it is possible to do a simple shore dive (max 5m) in a 'boat prohibited area'. Hard coral and resident reef fish as well as  barracudas can be seen. There is also a small 'Cenote' at 3m.

Tips

There are hyperbaric chambers in both Cancun and Playa del Carmen. Always carry dive insurance!

It is always better to pay for local transportation in Pesos as they either will not accept dollars or will give an unfavourable exchange rate. Always use the official taxis from the syndicates in the area or authorized tour operators/transport services. Be wary of anyone 'offering' you a good price for transport to your hotel. Anyone from the general public driving tourists to and/from hotels is not allowed.
